Italian-French long-range anti-ship missile

Otomat, also known through the Teseo family in Italian service, is a long-range subsonic anti-ship missile originally developed by OTO Melara and Matra and now associated with MBDA. It was built for shipborne and coastal defense use, giving surface forces an over-the-horizon strike weapon against naval targets.

Over-the-horizon targeting and active terminal seeker

Modern Otomat variants combine inertial/GPS navigation, command-system target data, and active radar terminal homing. Over-the-horizon targeting is central to the system: the firing ship may need helicopters, aircraft, coastal sensors, or networked data to update target position before terminal acquisition.

Designed for complex littoral and blue-water scenarios

Otomat's significance comes from giving medium-sized combatants a heavy anti-surface punch. Its effectiveness depends on the quality of the kill chain: detect, identify, track, launch, update, and discriminate the target in the terminal phase. In cluttered littoral waters, that targeting chain is often the harder problem than missile range.
