The R550 Magic II is the improved version of the French Matra Magic short-range air-to-air missile family. It served as a close-combat infrared weapon for aircraft such as the Mirage series, filling the same dogfight role that Sidewinder-type missiles occupied in many Western air forces.
Magic II improved the original Magic with better seeker and engagement performance, giving pilots a compact fire-and-forget weapon for visual-range combat. Its value came from quick acquisition, short-range maneuverability, and integration with French fighter avionics rather than from long-range beyond-visual-range reach.
Magic II is now largely a legacy missile, superseded in many roles by MICA IR and newer short-range missiles with better seekers and off-boresight performance. It remains relevant for understanding late Cold War and early modern French air combat doctrine, especially the layered pairing of Magic-class short-range weapons with medium-range missiles.
