Research Notes

British twin-35 mm anti-aircraft turret concept

medium

Marksman was developed as a self-contained anti-aircraft turret that could be fitted to different tank or heavy vehicle chassis. The concept reused available hulls while adding Marconi radar, fire control, and twin Oerlikon 35 mm guns for short-range air defense.

Radar-directed gun defense against low-altitude threats

medium

The system was intended to engage helicopters and low-flying aircraft with rapid cannon fire rather than missiles. Its modular turret approach allowed different hosts, including T-55, Chieftain, Leopard 2, and G6-related demonstrator configurations.

Limited adoption but clear export niche

medium

Marksman's best-known operational use was with Finland as ItPsv 90, where the turret was installed on available tank chassis and later adapted to Leopard 2 hulls. The system is significant as an upgrade path for legacy armor rather than a mass-produced new SPAAG family.
