Research Notes

Development as a landing platform helicopter

HMS Ocean was purpose-built to support Royal Marine helicopter assault and amphibious command tasks.

HMS Ocean was built in the 1990s as a landing platform helicopter for the Royal Navy. The ship was designed to support amphibious operations by carrying Royal Marines, helicopters, vehicles, and command staff. It was a more focused aviation assault platform than older improvised carriers, giving the UK a dedicated ship for helicopter-borne landing operations and crisis response. The design prioritized flight-deck capacity, troop accommodation, and amphibious command utility rather than fixed-wing carrier operations.

Helicopter assault and amphibious support

Ocean provided a large flight deck, hangar, troop spaces, vehicle capacity, and command facilities.

HMS Ocean's value came from sea-based helicopter lift. The ship could embark helicopters and Royal Marines, support airborne assault, conduct humanitarian relief, and serve as a command platform for amphibious operations. It did not operate catapult-launched aircraft and should not be treated as a conventional fleet carrier. Its role was closer to a helicopter assault ship: moving people and equipment ashore when ports or airfields might not be available.

Service and transfer to Brazil

Ocean served as a Royal Navy flagship and was later sold to Brazil as Atlântico.

HMS Ocean served in operations, exercises, and humanitarian tasks and became the Royal Navy fleet flagship before retirement. After decommissioning in 2018, the ship was sold to Brazil and entered service as Atlântico. That transfer extended the hull's life and shows the enduring value of helicopter-capable amphibious ships for medium navies. For database readers, Ocean is important because it filled the UK's amphibious aviation gap before the Queen Elizabeth-class carriers changed the fleet structure.
