Polaris-era strategic deterrent submarine

medium

The Resolution class was built around the United Kingdom's decision to put the Polaris strategic deterrent at sea.

Resolution-class submarines were the Royal Navy's first ballistic missile submarines and formed the sea-based element of the British Polaris programme. Four boats were built, giving the United Kingdom a continuous patrol force built around submerged survivability rather than fixed launch sites. Their introduction shifted the strategic deterrent from bomber dependence toward long-endurance submarine patrols.

Nuclear-powered SSBN with Polaris launch tubes

medium

The class combined nuclear propulsion with a dedicated ballistic missile compartment for Polaris missiles.

The design was a large nuclear-powered SSBN with a missile compartment sized for Polaris submarine-launched ballistic missiles. Nuclear propulsion allowed long submerged patrols, while the ballistic missile battery gave the boats a strategic role distinct from attack submarines. The class emphasized endurance, quiet submerged operation, missile handling, and the command systems needed for deterrent patrols.

Cold War patrol service before Vanguard replacement

medium

Resolution-class boats carried Britain's Polaris deterrent through much of the Cold War and were later replaced by the Vanguard class.

In service, the class maintained strategic patrols from the late 1960s into the Trident transition period. Their operational value was not measured by combat launches, but by the credibility of persistent at-sea deterrence. As the Vanguard class entered service with Trident missiles, the Resolution boats were withdrawn, closing the Polaris era in Royal Navy nuclear deterrent operations.
