Overview
Short 360
The Short 360, developed by Short Brothers in the 1980s, is a turboprop commuter aircraft designed to seat 36-39 passengers, featuring a larger cabin and improved aerodynamics over its predecessor, the Short 330. It is powered by Pratt & Whitney PT6A engines, operates from short runways, and is known for its reasonable cost, ease of maintenance, and compliance with noise regulations, with production concluding in 1991 after 165 units were delivered.

Research Notes

Larger commuter derivative of the Short 330

medium

The Short 360 was created to move the Skyvan/330 family into a larger commuter-aircraft bracket.

The Short 360 followed the 330 as Short Brothers responded to demand for a higher-capacity commuter aircraft. It kept the family's utilitarian structure but used a longer cabin and revised tail arrangement. The aircraft first flew in the early 1980s and entered service as a larger regional transport for airlines that needed more seats without moving to a faster pressurized turboprop.

Elongated cabin and revised single-tail layout

medium

The 360 increased passenger capacity and changed the empennage compared with the 330.

Technically, the Short 360 was a stretched development of the 330 with seating for roughly the high-30-passenger class. A conventional single fin replaced the earlier twin-tail look, improving the aircraft's identity while preserving the high-wing twin-turboprop formula. The unpressurized cabin and straightforward systems made it suitable for short regional routes and small-field operations.

Commuter airline and cargo feeder roles

medium

The 360 mainly worked as a regional airliner and later as a cargo feeder aircraft.

The Short 360 was used by commuter airlines on short sectors where capacity, economy, and field performance mattered more than cruise speed. As passenger use declined, surviving aircraft found work with cargo operators and specialist carriers. Its service life illustrates the niche filled by rugged small regional aircraft before newer turboprops and route consolidation changed the market.
