Overview
Starstreak
The Starstreak is a British high-velocity, close-range, man-portable surface-to-air missile system designed to defend against drones, helicopters, and fixed-wing aircraft at very low altitudes. It is known for its laser-beam riding guidance and high speed, making it one of the fastest short-range SAMs.

Research Notes

Development of a high-velocity short-range missile

Starstreak was developed by Thales as a very fast short-range air-defence missile using three dart submunitions.

Starstreak is a British short-range air-defence missile developed by Shorts and now associated with Thales. Thales markets STARStreak as a high-velocity missile able to counter fast and maneuvering targets. Its distinctive design releases three laser beam-riding darts after launch, giving it a different engagement mechanism from heat-seeking MANPADS. The system was developed to protect troops and sites from low-flying aircraft and helicopters at short range.

Laser beam-riding high-speed engagement

The missile's very high speed and laser guidance make it hard to spoof with conventional infrared countermeasures.

Starstreak's main tactical advantage is speed and guidance method. Because it rides a laser beam rather than homing on infrared emissions, it is less vulnerable to flares than traditional heat-seeking missiles. The three-dart payload is intended to improve hit probability and lethality against small or fast targets. The system can be used in man-portable, lightweight multiple launcher, and vehicle-mounted forms. Its limitations are the need for operator tracking and line of sight during engagement.

Service and contemporary visibility

Starstreak has served with British forces and gained renewed attention through air-defence support to Ukraine.

Starstreak has been operated by the UK and export users as part of short-range air-defence forces. It became more visible after the UK supplied systems to Ukraine, where short-range defences against aircraft, helicopters, and drones became especially important. The missile's service history shows why layered air defence requires different tools: large systems for area protection, medium systems such as Sky Sabre, and mobile short-range weapons such as Starstreak for the front line.
