Overview
RT-20
The RT-20 is a Croatian bullpup anti-materiel rifle developed in the mid-1990s, chambered in 20x110mm Hispano, featuring a unique counter-recoil system that redirects propellant gases to minimize recoil. This single-shot, bolt-action weapon delivers a high muzzle energy of 46,962.5 J and supports various ammunition types, making it one of the most powerful anti-materiel rifles in service.

Research Notes

Croatian 20 mm anti-materiel rifle from wartime requirements

medium

The RT-20 was developed in Croatia in the 1990s as an unusually powerful shoulder-fired anti-materiel weapon.

The RT-20 was developed in Croatia during the 1990s for anti-materiel use against equipment, light armour, and protected positions. Its name is commonly expanded from Croatian wording meaning a hand cannon of 20 mm calibre, which accurately reflects its unusual scale. The weapon belongs to a small group of rifles that push beyond .50 BMG into cannon-calibre ammunition, trading portability and firing comfort for exceptional terminal effect.

Bullpup 20x110 mm rifle with recoil-management exhaust

medium

The RT-20 uses a single-shot bolt-action layout and a distinctive gas tube to reduce recoil from 20 mm ammunition.

Technically, the RT-20 is a single-shot bullpup anti-materiel rifle chambered for 20x110 mm Hispano ammunition. Because that cartridge produces far more recoil than typical sniper-rifle ammunition, the weapon uses a prominent over-barrel recoil-management tube that vents gases rearward. This design makes the rifle more usable but also creates a dangerous backblast area and requires disciplined firing procedures.

Specialist weapon for equipment destruction, not routine sniping

medium

Its size, backblast, and ammunition burden make it suitable only for selected anti-materiel missions.

Operationally, the RT-20 is best viewed as a specialist anti-materiel system rather than a general sniper rifle. It can threaten light vehicles, communications gear, unexploded ordnance, aircraft on the ground, and hard cover, but its bulk and firing signature limit tactical flexibility. It is most useful when a small team needs a portable weapon with more destructive effect than .50-calibre rifles can provide.
