Airborne early warning system

DRDO AEW&CS, also known as NETRA, gives India an airborne radar and battle-management platform for airspace surveillance.

NETRA is an airborne early warning and control system developed around an aircraft-mounted sensor suite, mission computers, datalinks, and operator consoles. Its purpose is to detect, track, and help manage air threats beyond the range and line of sight of ground radars. For a large country with maritime and mountain approaches, airborne early warning is a major force multiplier.

Sensor and command value

The system extends radar coverage, supports fighter control, and improves the air force's shared tactical picture.

An AEW&CS aircraft is valuable because height gives its radar a wider horizon. It can see low-flying targets earlier than many ground sensors, coordinate fighters, monitor friendly and hostile tracks, and relay information across the force. The platform's combat value therefore comes from situational awareness and command support rather than from direct weapons carriage.

Indigenous capability

NETRA is significant because it reflects India's effort to build domestic airborne sensor and mission-system expertise.

For HiWars, NETRA is a good example of how modern military capability depends on electronics, software, and integration work as much as on aircraft performance. The programme strengthens Indian experience in airborne radar, mission systems, and networked air operations, all of which matter in high-tempo air defence and strike campaigns.
