Overview
Godavari
The Godavari-class frigates, India's first major indigenously developed warships, were designed to enhance naval capabilities with a 72% indigenous content and the ability to deploy two Sea King helicopters. Commissioned between 1983 and 1988, these frigates incorporated lessons from the Indo-Pakistan War of 1971 and featured significant upgrades in weapons and sensors throughout their service, which concluded between 2015 and 2022.

Research Notes

Indigenous frigate milestone

The Godavari class was India's first major indigenously designed frigate class and a key step in domestic warship development.

The Godavari-class frigates built on earlier Indian experience but represented a larger domestic design effort. They combined anti-surface, anti-submarine, air-defence, and helicopter capabilities in a multi-role frigate hull. The class helped establish design confidence for later Indian frigates and destroyers.

Multi-role frigate fit

Godavari-class ships carried missiles, guns, ASW weapons, sensors, and helicopters for escort and patrol missions.

The class was intended to handle a range of fleet tasks rather than only one combat function. Its aviation facilities were especially important because shipborne helicopters extend surveillance and anti-submarine reach. The ships' mixed weapons and sensors allowed them to escort larger units, patrol sea lanes, and contribute to naval presence missions.

Legacy value

Godavari is significant because it connects India's early indigenous frigate work with later blue-water fleet ambitions.

Even as newer ships replaced it, the class retained historical value as proof that Indian yards and designers could deliver complex surface combatants. For HiWars, it helps readers understand the lineage from earlier national frigate programmes to more modern destroyers, corvettes, and carrier-group escorts.
