The Kolkata class, Project 15A, is a class of Indian Navy guided-missile destroyers built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders. It followed the Delhi class and incorporated more advanced sensors, stealth shaping, and missile systems. The class is central to India's indigenous large surface combatant development.
Kolkata-class destroyers carry BrahMos supersonic anti-ship missiles, Barak 8 air-defense missiles, a main gun, torpedoes, rocket launchers, helicopters, and modern radar and combat-management systems. The class gives India a multi-role destroyer capable of air defense, surface strike, and ASW support.
Kolkata-class ships support carrier groups, independent deployments, and Indian Ocean presence missions. Their value is both operational and industrial: they demonstrate India's ability to build increasingly complex destroyers while integrating domestic and foreign weapons into one combat system.
