Research Notes

Project 15B stealth destroyer class

medium

The Visakhapatnam class is India's Project 15B follow-on to the Kolkata-class guided missile destroyer.

The Visakhapatnam class, also known as Project 15B or P-15 Bravo, is a class of Indian Navy stealth guided missile destroyers. The ships were designed by the Indian Navy's Directorate of Naval Design and built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited. INS Visakhapatnam, the lead ship, was commissioned in November 2021 as the first of four planned Project 15B destroyers.

Large multi-role missile destroyer

medium

Project 15B combines area air defence, anti-ship missiles, guns, sensors, and helicopter operations in a stealthier hull.

Technically, the Visakhapatnam class is an evolution of India's Project 15A Kolkata class with improved stealth shaping and updated combat systems. The ships carry a layered missile and gun armament, modern radars, anti-submarine sensors, and helicopter facilities. Their role is fleet air defence, surface strike, escort, and command presence in Indian Ocean operations.

Front-line Indian Ocean fleet escort

medium

The class strengthens India's blue-water surface fleet and escort capacity for carrier and task-group operations.

Operationally, Project 15B destroyers are among the Indian Navy's most capable surface combatants. They support carrier groups, independent deployments, maritime security operations, and high-end deterrence patrols. Their indigenous design and construction are also significant for India's long-term naval-industrial capacity.
