Research Notes

Anti-radiation loitering munition

medium

IAI Harpy is a loitering weapon designed to find and attack radar emitters.

IAI Harpy is one of the best-known early loitering munitions, built around the suppression of enemy air defenses. Instead of being a reusable reconnaissance UAV, it is a one-way weapon that searches for radar emissions, loiters over a target area, and dives onto an emitter when conditions are met. This makes it a bridge between missile, UAV, and electronic-warfare concepts.

Autonomous search against radar targets

medium

The design focuses on passive emitter detection rather than pilot-guided strike.

Harpy's main design logic is autonomy against radar targets. A passive seeker lets it search without broadcasting its own targeting radar, while the loitering flight profile allows the weapon to wait for enemy radars to switch on. That is different from a conventional anti-radiation missile, which is typically fired toward a known threat and has less time on station.

Air-defense suppression tool

medium

Harpy is valuable because it can punish radar use and complicate air-defense command decisions.

The weapon's operational effect is not only physical destruction. By forcing radar operators to choose between emitting and risking attack, or staying silent and losing situational awareness, Harpy can degrade an integrated air-defense network. Its limitations are also clear: it is specialized against emitters and depends on target behavior, mission planning, and rules for autonomous attack.
