SR-99

The IMI SR-99 was developed as a modernized Israeli semi-automatic sniper or designated-marksman rifle related to the Galil Sniper lineage. It kept the broad Galil mechanical heritage while replacing older wooden furniture with more adjustable and modern components. The weapon appeared as militaries were looking for rifles that could provide faster follow-up shots than bolt-action sniper rifles while still offering better precision than standard assault rifles.

Technically, the SR-99 is a semi-automatic 7.62x51 mm NATO precision rifle. Its Galil-derived action prioritizes reliability and ruggedness, while the precision role requires optics, improved stock geometry, a suitable barrel, and match-quality ammunition. It is best understood as a designated marksman or squad-support sniper rifle rather than an extreme-range bolt-action system.

Operationally, the SR-99 is useful for overwatch, urban security, patrol support, and engagements where a trained marksman may need multiple rapid shots. Its semi-automatic action gives faster follow-up fire than bolt-action rifles, while 7.62 mm ammunition improves range and barrier performance over 5.56 mm rifles. Its limitations are weight, maintenance of precision, and less ultimate accuracy than specialist bolt-action sniper systems.
