Research Notes

Italian light aircraft carrier

Giuseppe Garibaldi was Italy's first through-deck aviation ship and a major step toward modern naval aviation.

Giuseppe Garibaldi introduced Italy to fixed-wing carrier aviation with a compact through-deck ship able to operate helicopters and STOVL aircraft. Its entry into service changed the Italian Navy's reach by allowing air defence, strike support, and maritime surveillance from a sea-based aviation platform. The ship also served as a flagship and command platform.

Carrier aviation role

The ship's value came from its flight deck, hangar, command systems, and ability to support AV-8B Harrier and helicopter operations.

A light carrier does not match a large fleet carrier's sortie capacity, but it gives a navy independent aviation at sea. Giuseppe Garibaldi could support maritime air cover, anti-submarine helicopters, amphibious support, and crisis-response missions. Its compact size also made it suitable for Italy's Mediterranean-focused naval posture.

Strategic legacy

The carrier matters because it laid the operational foundation for later Italian aviation ships such as Cavour and Trieste.

For HiWars, Giuseppe Garibaldi is best read as a transition platform. It taught the Italian Navy how to operate fixed-wing aircraft at sea, manage aviation logistics, and command task groups around a carrier. That experience shaped later Italian naval aviation and amphibious-capable ships.
