Amphibious transport dock

San Giorgio is the lead ship of an Italian amphibious transport class used for landing forces, support missions, and training.

The San Giorgio class gives the Italian Navy a platform for amphibious lift, vehicle and troop transport, helicopter operations, and command support. These ships are valuable because they can move forces from sea to shore while also supporting non-combat missions such as evacuations, disaster relief, and humanitarian assistance.

Amphibious flexibility

The ship combines landing craft, vehicle spaces, aviation facilities, and command capacity in one hull.

Amphibious ships are not judged only by weapons. Their military value comes from lift capacity, embarked landing craft, helicopter support, medical or command spaces, and the ability to operate with marines or army units. San Giorgio gives Italy a practical expeditionary tool for Mediterranean and overseas missions.

Beyond combat landing

San Giorgio matters because amphibious ships are often used for crisis response as much as assault operations.

Modern amphibious vessels spend much of their lives on presence, training, evacuation, and assistance tasks. That makes San Giorgio relevant to conflict and security analysis even outside amphibious assaults. The class helps explain how navies use flexible support ships to project influence and respond to emergencies.
