Research Notes

JMSDF's first general-purpose destroyer class

medium

The Hatsuyuki class was the JMSDF's first general-purpose destroyer class, entering service in the 1980s. It combined anti-submarine, anti-air, and anti-surface capabilities in a single escort type, moving beyond more specialized earlier destroyer categories. The class helped standardize modern JMSDF escort flotilla composition.

COGOG propulsion and helicopter-capable escort layout

medium

Hatsuyuki-class ships used gas-turbine propulsion and carried a helicopter, Sea Sparrow point-defense missiles, anti-ship missiles, guns, torpedoes, and sonar. This made them flexible escorts for sea-lane defense and fleet support. The design represented a major JMSDF step toward modern multi-role surface combatants.
