The Tachikaze class was a JMSDF guided-missile destroyer design developed to provide fleet air-defense command and missile capability before the Aegis era. It followed earlier Japanese missile destroyer work and helped mature domestic DDG operations.
The class centered on Standard missile air defense, surface guns, ASW systems, and command facilities. Some ships were later adapted for flagship or command roles, reflecting the need for air-defense coordination in escort formations.
