Type 04 / ZBD-04 Metadata Mismatch

medium

The current record assigns Type 04 to Japan, but the best-documented modern Type 04 infantry fighting vehicle is China's ZBD-04, also known as WZ502. It was developed to replace older Type 86/BMP-1-derived vehicles and to operate with modern Chinese armored formations. Japan has several Type 4 wartime systems and modern Type-numbered equipment, but a Japanese Type 04 IFV is not supported by the strongest open sources. The page should therefore explain the likely China/Japan metadata mismatch while summarizing the known ZBD-04 IFV.

BMP-3-Influenced Turret and Amphibious IFV Role

medium

The ZBD-04 combines a tracked amphibious hull with a turret arrangement often compared with the Russian BMP-3 family: a 100 mm gun/launcher paired with a 30 mm autocannon and coaxial machine gun. Later ZBD-04A variants improve protection and land combat performance, accepting reduced amphibious emphasis compared with the original design. This mix gives Chinese mechanized infantry organic high-explosive fire, anti-armor missile potential, and automatic-cannon support from a single vehicle.

Mechanized Infantry Fire Support

medium

In service, the ZBD-04 family gives PLA mechanized infantry a tracked vehicle able to keep pace with tanks while delivering direct fire against infantry positions, light armor, and fortified points. The original amphibious capability also supports river-crossing and littoral operations, though upgraded protection changes the mobility tradeoff. For HiWars users, the essential point is that this entry's useful military content is Chinese IFV analysis; the current Japan assignment should be reviewed separately from article enrichment.
