Development Context

medium

Type 75 was Japan's first large-scale indigenous 155 mm self-propelled howitzer.

The Type 75 was developed by Japanese industry to give the JGSDF a domestic tracked 155 mm artillery system instead of relying on imported M109-type solutions. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries built the hull, while Japan Steel Works supplied the gun and turret. Standardized in the mid-1970s, it formed a key part of Japan's Cold War artillery modernization.

Technical Profile

medium

The vehicle mounted a 155 mm howitzer on a tracked armored chassis with a fully enclosed turret.

Type 75 used a 155 mm gun in a turreted tracked vehicle, giving crews armored mobility and faster displacement than towed artillery. Its range and fire-control arrangements were adequate for its era but later fell behind newer 155 mm systems. The vehicle's domestic production was nevertheless important for Japan's artillery industrial base.

Operational Role

medium

Type 75 served JGSDF artillery units until replacement by the Type 99 and other newer systems.

Operationally, Type 75 supported Japanese ground-defense formations with mobile indirect fire. It was intended to operate within Japan's defensive doctrine, moving between prepared positions and supporting maneuver units. As Type 99 and other modern systems entered service, Type 75 became increasingly obsolete and was retired from front-line use.
