Research Notes

Wheeled reconnaissance vehicle for JGSDF scouts

medium

The Type 87 RCV gave Japanese reconnaissance units an armored 6x6 scout platform.

The Type 87 Reconnaissance Combat Vehicle was developed by Komatsu for the JGSDF and adopted in 1987. Before its arrival, Japanese reconnaissance units relied more heavily on soft-skinned vehicles. The Type 87 provided protected mobility, sensors, communications, and a cannon armament suitable for scout patrols and security missions.

6x6 armored scout with 25 mm cannon

medium

The vehicle combines road mobility, reconnaissance communications, and a 25 mm weapon for self-defence.

Technically, the Type 87 RCV is a wheeled armored reconnaissance vehicle, not a tank. Its 6x6 chassis provides useful road speed and patrol endurance, while its 25 mm cannon can engage light vehicles and suppress enemy positions. Protection is adequate for reconnaissance threats but not for direct combat against tanks or heavy anti-armour weapons.

Screening, route reconnaissance, and security

medium

The Type 87 supports forward observation and movement security for JGSDF formations.

Operationally, the Type 87 is used to scout routes, screen unit movement, observe enemy activity, and maintain contact without committing heavier forces. Its role rewards mobility, communications, and disciplined withdrawal more than heavy firepower. It remains a useful example of Japan adapting wheeled armored reconnaissance to national defence needs.
