Research Notes

Tracked infantry fighting vehicle

Type 89 is Japan's tracked infantry fighting vehicle designed to carry mechanised infantry and support them with onboard weapons.

The Mitsubishi Type 89 IFV gives mechanised infantry more firepower and battlefield mobility than an APC. It carries dismounts while also using its cannon, machine gun, and anti-tank missiles to support them. The vehicle is particularly associated with Japan's heavier ground formations, where it can operate alongside tanks.

Mechanised infantry support

The vehicle combines troop carriage, a medium cannon, anti-tank missiles, armour, and tracked mobility.

An IFV is meant to fight with infantry rather than simply deliver them. Type 89's tracked chassis gives it better cross-country mobility than wheeled APCs, while its armament lets it engage light armour, infantry positions, and some armoured threats. That makes it a more combat-oriented vehicle than Type 96.

Limited but important fleet

Type 89 matters because it represents Japan's specialised mechanised infantry capability despite relatively limited numbers.

The Type 89 fleet is smaller than many comparable IFV programmes, but it remains important for understanding Japan's ground force structure. It supports heavier formations and illustrates the trade-off between expensive tracked combat vehicles and more numerous wheeled platforms.
