Type 91 Kai

The Type 91 Kai is an improved version of Japan's Type 91 man-portable air-defence system. It followed the original Type 91 as the Self-Defense Forces sought better performance against evolving low-altitude threats. The upgrade is associated in open sources with improved seeker capability and a smokeless motor, both relevant for modern MANPADS survivability and engagement quality.

Technically, Type 91 Kai keeps the shoulder-fired short-range SAM concept while improving the missile's seeker and launch characteristics. Better imaging or seeker discrimination helps against countermeasures and difficult engagement conditions, while reduced smoke can make the launch team harder to detect. It remains constrained by MANPADS limits: range, weather, line of sight, and target aspect.

Operationally, Type 91 Kai supports infantry, base defence, and mobile security units that need a portable air-defence layer. It is useful for complicating low-altitude air operations and protecting dispersed positions. Like all MANPADS, it works best with good warning, trained operators, strict identification procedures, and integration with other air-defence assets.
