The Type 97 sniper rifle was based on the Arisaka Type 38 infantry rifle and adapted for scoped precision fire. Its 6.5 mm chambering, long action, and factory-matched optical sight reflected Japanese prewar sniper doctrine.
Type 97 rifles were typically paired with fixed-power scopes that were matched and zeroed to the rifle. This created a stable sniper system but limited field flexibility compared with later rifles using more adjustable optics and mounting arrangements.
The Type 97 remained in Japanese service during World War II even after the Type 99 sniper rifle appeared. It is important as a purpose-built Imperial Japanese sniper arm rather than a generic Type 38 rifle entry.
