Tracked self-propelled howitzer

Type 99 is a Japanese 155 mm tracked self-propelled howitzer used for mobile artillery fire support.

The Type 99 self-propelled howitzer provides Japanese ground forces with mobile 155 mm artillery. Unlike towed guns, it can fire and reposition more quickly, reducing vulnerability to counter-battery fire. Its tracked chassis supports operations with heavier formations and gives artillery units better protection and mobility.

Mobile indirect fire

The system combines a 155 mm gun, armoured mobility, and crew protection for battlefield fire support.

Self-propelled artillery delivers high-volume indirect fire while staying mobile. Type 99 can support manoeuvre units, suppress enemy positions, attack concentrations, and shift firing positions after missions. Its value depends not only on the gun but also on command, targeting, ammunition supply, and coordination with observers.

Artillery modernisation

Type 99 matters because artillery remains one of the core tools for ground-force lethality and area denial.

Modern armies still rely heavily on artillery despite the rise of missiles and drones. Type 99 gives Japan a protected tracked artillery option, while newer wheeled artillery complements it in more mobile roles. In HiWars, it helps represent the indirect-fire layer of Japanese ground capability.
