The Donghae-class Patrol Combat Corvette, developed for the Republic of Korea Navy, is designed for maritime border patrol and littoral zone protection, featuring a U-shaped hull for stability and a CODOG propulsion system for speeds up to 30 knots. While equipped for surface combat and anti-submarine warfare, it lacks air defense capabilities due to budget constraints, and the class is being phased out under the FFX program after a notable operational history, including participation in the 199

Research Notes

Early South Korean corvette class for coastal defense

medium

The Donghae class was one of South Korea's early domestically built patrol combat corvette classes. It was developed for the Republic of Korea Navy during a period when the fleet needed affordable ships for coastal patrol, anti-infiltration work, and local sea control. The class helped South Korea build shipbuilding experience before later Pohang and larger combatant programs matured.

Fast CODOG corvette with guns and limited ASW capability

medium

Donghae-class ships used a combined diesel-or-gas propulsion arrangement that gave high speed for a small displacement hull. Their armament focused on guns, sensors, and light anti-submarine capability rather than heavy missile warfare. That made them useful for patrol combat in Korean coastal waters, where speed and presence were often more important than long-range strike weapons.

Stepping stone in South Korea's surface-fleet modernization

medium

The class is historically important as a foundation layer in South Korea's move from imported and smaller patrol craft toward locally produced combatants. Later Korean corvettes and frigates became more capable, but Donghae showed that domestic yards and the navy could field useful patrol combatants for local defense missions.
