Research Notes

Light tank derivative

K21-105 is a light tank/fire-support derivative of the K21 infantry fighting vehicle concept.

The K21-105 pairs the mobility of the K21 tracked platform with a larger 105 mm gun turret concept for direct fire support. It is best understood as a light tank or medium fire-support vehicle rather than a standard IFV. The design targets customers and missions that need mobile firepower without the mass and cost of a full main battle tank.

Mobile direct fire

The vehicle concept provides heavier gun firepower on a lighter tracked chassis, trading heavy MBT protection for mobility and cost.

Light tanks and fire-support vehicles fill a gap between IFVs and main battle tanks. K21-105 can engage light armour, fortifications, and infantry positions with more authority than an autocannon-armed IFV. Its lighter chassis makes it easier to deploy, but it should not be treated as a substitute for heavily armoured tanks in the most intense direct-fire fights.

Export and niche role

K21-105 matters because it shows how South Korean industry adapts existing armored platforms for exportable fire-support roles.

For HiWars, K21-105 is useful because it shows the modular logic of modern armoured vehicle families. A proven chassis can support new turrets and mission packages, creating variants for different customers and tactical niches without starting a vehicle programme from zero.
