Research Notes

Korean M109-derived howitzer

K55 is South Korea's locally produced 155 mm self-propelled howitzer family based on the M109 lineage.

The K55 self-propelled howitzer gave South Korea a large tracked artillery fleet before the K9 Thunder became the country's best-known artillery system. It is based on the M109 concept but produced and adapted for Korean service. The K55A1 upgrade extended the system's usefulness with improved navigation, fire-control, and operational features.

Mobile artillery support

K55 provides armoured, mobile 155 mm indirect fire for Korean ground formations.

Self-propelled howitzers can fire, relocate, and keep pace with armoured units better than towed guns. K55 supports suppression, counter-battery fire, defensive plans, and deep fire support. Its large fleet size matters because artillery volume is a key feature of the Korean Peninsula's military balance.

Bridge to K9-era artillery

K55 matters because it formed the artillery backbone that later Korean systems modernised and supplemented.

For HiWars, K55 shows the continuity of Korean artillery development. The system remains relevant as upgraded K55A1 vehicles and support equipment work alongside newer K9-family systems, sustaining a dense and mobile artillery force.
