Research Notes

ROKAF primary trainer derived from KC-100

medium

The KT-100 was developed from KAI's KC-100 Naraon light aircraft to support Republic of Korea Air Force academy training.

The KT-100 is a South Korean primary trainer based on Korea Aerospace Industries' KC-100 Naraon. KAI developed the KC-100 as a domestically certified light aircraft, then adapted it into the KT-100 for Republic of Korea Air Force academy cadets and introductory flight training. The aircraft is important because it links Korea's civil-aircraft certification effort with military pilot training, giving local industry experience beyond fighters and helicopters.

Four-seat composite trainer with military training equipment

medium

The KT-100 keeps the KC-100's light-aircraft structure while adding systems appropriate for ab initio military flight instruction.

Technically, the KT-100 is a single-engine, four-seat, low-wing training aircraft derived from the KC-100. The base aircraft uses composite construction, modern avionics, and light-aircraft handling suited to early pilot instruction. Military adaptations include training, recording, identification, and communications equipment needed by the air force academy. Its role is not advanced tactical training but screening and primary flight experience before cadets move to more demanding aircraft.

Introductory pilot training and domestic aerospace development

medium

The KT-100 supports early flight instruction while demonstrating that Korean industry can adapt civil aircraft into military training platforms.

Operationally, the KT-100 fills the first stage of pilot training for South Korea. It gives cadets basic stick-and-rudder experience, cockpit discipline, navigation exposure, and airfield procedures before more advanced trainers. Its strategic value is industrial as well as operational: it keeps part of the training pipeline on a Korean-developed aircraft and broadens KAI's portfolio beyond combat aircraft such as the T-50 and FA-50.
