Research Notes

Third phase of Korea's destroyer modernization

medium

KDX-III delivered a large Aegis destroyer class for high-end naval defence.

The KDX-III program produced the Sejong the Great class as the most capable destroyer generation in South Korea's KDX series. It followed earlier KDX-I and KDX-II ships with a much larger hull, Aegis combat system, and expanded missile capacity. The program was central to South Korea's move from a coastal navy toward a force able to protect wider maritime interests.

Aegis combatant with multi-mission missile loadout

medium

KDX-III combines area-air-defence sensors, vertical launch cells, guns, torpedoes, and helicopter support.

Technically, KDX-III ships are multi-mission guided-missile destroyers. Their SPY-1 radar and Aegis integration allow them to manage complex air and missile threats, while their weapons fit supports anti-air, anti-submarine, anti-surface, and land-attack missions. The large VLS battery gives commanders flexibility in choosing mission loadouts.

Strategic escort and missile-defence contributor

medium

KDX-III ships anchor ROKN task groups and strengthen allied missile-warning and air-defence operations.

Operationally, KDX-III destroyers can escort amphibious groups, defend key sea lanes, participate in ballistic-missile tracking, and act as command ships in multinational exercises. Their high cost and capability mean they are strategic assets requiring careful maintenance and crew proficiency. They are among the ROKN's most visible deterrence platforms.
