Research Notes

Korean air-cushioned landing craft

medium

The Solgae class was developed to support ROKN amphibious ships with high-speed ship-to-shore movement.

The Solgae class, often discussed as LSF-II or Solgae 631-class LCAC, was developed by South Korea to operate from amphibious assault ships such as the Dokdo class. It gives the ROKN a high-speed means of moving troops, vehicles, and supplies from ship to shore without relying only on conventional landing craft or port facilities.

Air-cushion vehicle for amphibious lift

medium

The craft rides on an air cushion and uses rear propulsion fans to cross water, mud flats, and beaches.

Technically, Solgae is a landing craft air cushion rather than a landing platform dock. The air-cushion design allows it to move quickly over water and onto suitable beaches, carrying military cargo or personnel from an amphibious ship. Its utility depends on payload, beach conditions, sea state, maintenance of skirt systems, and the availability of compatible well-deck ships.

Fast ship-to-shore connector

medium

The class supports amphibious assault, logistics, evacuation, and disaster-relief access to damaged coastlines.

Operationally, Solgae craft allow the ROKN and Marine Corps to move forces ashore faster and with more flexibility than displacement landing craft. They are useful for amphibious operations, island reinforcement, logistics, and emergency response. Their tactical value is greatest when coordinated with naval gunfire, aviation, and beach reconnaissance.
