Research Notes

NATO air-defense contribution

The class gives the Netherlands a high-value NATO contribution: scarce air-defense escorts that can protect maritime task groups in contested waters. Upgrades and ballistic-missile-defense experiments also show how European frigates can be adapted to changing missile threats without replacing the hulls immediately.
