Development History

medium

WKW Wilk/Tor is a Polish large-caliber rifle developed by ZM Tarnow for anti-materiel and precision roles.

The WKW Wilk, later known as Tor, was developed in Poland by Zaklady Mechaniczne Tarnow as a large-caliber sniper and anti-materiel rifle. Work began around the early 2000s, answering a requirement for a domestic weapon capable of engaging light materiel, vehicles, communications equipment, and other targets beyond the practical effects of standard sniper rifles. The name Wilk was associated with the development phase, while Tor became the production/service name. Its appearance in Polish service reflects a wider post-Cold War effort to field modern domestic infantry weapons rather than relying only on legacy Soviet-pattern equipment.

Technical Profile

medium

The rifle uses a bullpup bolt-action layout and .50 BMG-class ammunition for long-range materiel effects.

Technically, WKW Tor is a manually operated bolt-action rifle in a bullpup layout, which shortens overall length while retaining a long barrel. It is chambered for .50 BMG-class ammunition, giving it the energy needed for anti-materiel work such as disabling vehicles, radar components, equipment, or protected firing positions. The rifle feeds from detachable magazines and is normally used with optical sights and support equipment such as a bipod. Its purpose is different from a 7.62 mm sniper rifle: Tor trades weight and portability for range, penetration, and destructive effect against equipment.

Operational Use

medium

Tor gives Polish and export users a domestic heavy precision rifle for specialized targets.

In operational use, WKW Tor is a specialist weapon. It is too heavy for ordinary infantry fire support, but valuable when trained marksmen need to engage vehicles, sensors, aircraft on the ground, unexploded ordnance, or hardened positions. Polish adoption gave the armed forces a domestic anti-materiel rifle and supported ZM Tarnow's role in national small-arms modernization. The rifle has also appeared with foreign users. Its database significance is that it fills a specific niche between conventional sniper rifles and crew-served weapons: precision effects against materiel at extended ranges.
