Development History

medium

PSL is a Romanian semi-automatic marksman rifle developed as a Dragunov-role equivalent.

The PSL, also called FPK or Romak-3 in some markets, was developed in Romania in the early 1970s as a designated marksman rifle serving a role similar to the Soviet SVD. Modern Firearms notes that it entered production around 1973 and was issued to Romanian forces and exported. Although often mistaken for a Dragunov because of its appearance and role, the PSL is mechanically different, being based on enlarged Kalashnikov/RPK-style construction. This distinction is central to understanding the rifle.

Technical Profile

medium

The rifle is a gas-operated 7.62x54R semi-automatic DMR using a 10-round magazine and optic.

Technically, PSL is a semi-automatic gas-operated rifle chambered for 7.62x54R. It typically uses a 10-round detachable magazine and a dedicated optical sight, giving infantry units more reach than ordinary assault rifles. Its RPK-derived receiver and long-stroke operating system make it robust but less refined than the SVD. The PSL is best classified as a designated marksman rifle rather than a precision sniper system. It provides squad or platoon-level extended-range fire with full-power ammunition.

Operational Use

medium

PSL served Romania and export users as a practical, rugged marksman rifle.

Operationally, the PSL has appeared with Romanian forces, Middle Eastern users, and commercial/import markets. Its battlefield value is practical: it gives a trained marksman semi-automatic fire at ranges beyond standard rifles without the cost or complexity of high-end sniper systems. Export and surplus circulation made it a recognizable weapon in several conflicts. Its limitations include heat sensitivity and accuracy below purpose-built sniper rifles, but it remains an important Warsaw Pact-era DMR design.
