Research Notes

Towed Partner to Msta-S

The 2A65 gave Soviet artillery a modern 152 mm towed howitzer alongside the 2S19 family.

The 2A65 Msta-B was developed in the late Soviet period as a modern 152 mm towed howitzer. It shared the broader Msta artillery modernization effort with the 2S19 Msta-S self-propelled howitzer, giving units a less costly and simpler towed option. Its role was to replace or supplement older D-20 and related systems with better range and ammunition compatibility.

Modern 152 mm Howitzer

The weapon uses a long 152 mm barrel, split-trail carriage, and separate-loading ammunition.

Msta-B is a conventional but modernized towed howitzer with a long barrel, double-baffle muzzle brake, and carriage sized for heavy 152 mm firing stresses. Unlike the flatter-shooting 2A36, it is a howitzer optimized for high-angle and indirect fires. The design is simpler to sustain than a self-propelled system but depends on trucks and crew discipline for movement and survivability.

Post-Soviet Artillery Workhorse

The Msta-B remains visible in Russian and former Soviet inventories.

The 2A65 has served with Russia and other post-Soviet users and has been seen in modern conflicts where legacy 152 mm ammunition stocks remain important. It represents the continued relevance of towed artillery in large-scale fires, especially when operators can disperse guns, use prepared positions, and exploit existing ammunition supply.
