Research Notes

Airborne anti-tank firepower for Russian VDV

Sprut-SD gives airborne troops a lightweight amphibious platform with a 125 mm gun.

2S25 Sprut-SD was developed to give Russian airborne forces a vehicle with tank-level direct firepower while preserving air-transportable and amphibious characteristics. Its development by Volgograd Tractor Plant addressed a problem common to airborne units: light vehicles are mobile but often lack a gun able to threaten main battle tanks. Sprut-SD therefore sits between light tank, tank destroyer, and airborne assault support vehicle.

Light chassis with a tank-caliber gun

Sprut-SD trades heavy armor for air-deployable mobility and tank-caliber firepower.

The vehicle mounts a 125 mm gun in a turret on a lightweight tracked chassis derived from airborne-vehicle design practice. It can swim, operate with airborne formations, and fire tank ammunition, but its protection is far lighter than a main battle tank. That tradeoff defines the system: mobility and deployability are prioritized over armor thickness.

Niche system with high operational contrast

Sprut-SD is important as a niche airborne anti-tank vehicle with clear tradeoffs.

Sprut-SD has remained a relatively small and specialized Russian fleet, which makes it more interesting than a generic armored vehicle. Its battlefield value depends heavily on terrain, airlift assumptions, and whether light armor can survive modern drones and anti-tank weapons. For HiWars, it explains why airborne forces still seek direct-fire vehicles despite obvious survivability limits.
