Research Notes

BMP-3 family fire-support vehicle

Vena applies the Russian 120 mm gun-mortar idea to a BMP-3-derived platform.

2S31 Vena was developed as a Russian 120 mm self-propelled gun-mortar using the BMP-3 family as its base. The design built on the Soviet/Russian preference for versatile 120 mm systems able to fire mortar bombs and artillery-style rounds. It was shown publicly in the late 1990s as a more modern successor concept to earlier Nona-family vehicles.

High-angle fire support with armored mobility

Vena gives mechanized troops protected mobile 120 mm indirect-fire support.

The Vena combines an armored tracked chassis with a turreted 120 mm weapon that can provide indirect mortar fire and more direct gun-style engagements. Compared with a towed mortar, the vehicle offers protection, faster displacement, and integrated fire-control equipment. Its tactical role is close support for mechanized units rather than long-range strategic fires.

Limited but informative Russian artillery branch

Vena shows how Russian forces package mortar fire into armored mechanized units.

Vena is not as famous as Msta-S or Koalitsiya-SV, but it reveals a distinct Russian approach to battalion-level fire support. The vehicle emphasizes responsive, mobile, high-angle fire from inside armored formations. A richer page helps users understand the continuum from portable mortars to Nona, Vena, and heavy self-propelled howitzers.
