Kovrov compact SMG project
The AEK-919K was developed at Kovrov in the 1990s for military and law-enforcement users needing a compact automatic weapon.
The AEK-919K Kashtan emerged during the post-Soviet 1990s, when Russian military and security users wanted compact automatic weapons for crews, protective details, and special law-enforcement roles. Modern Firearms notes that the early design was influenced by the Austrian Steyr MPi-69 and then revised after testing. That lineage makes the Kashtan a practical adaptation rather than a clean-sheet prestige program: it was meant to be small, available, and useful in close quarters.
