Research Notes

Post-Soviet submachine gun built around AK familiarity

The PP-19 Bizon was developed in the 1990s for Russian security and law-enforcement units needing compact automatic fire.

The PP-19 Bizon was developed at Izhmash in the early post-Soviet period, with design lineage connected to the Kalashnikov and Dragunov families. It answered a domestic security need for a compact submachine gun suitable for close-range operations, counter-terror tasks, and law-enforcement response. Its relationship to AK-pattern controls helped reduce training burden for users already familiar with Soviet small arms.

Helical magazine gave capacity but created reliability complexity

The Bizon's most distinctive feature is its under-barrel helical magazine, which offered high capacity in a compact package.

The weapon's design combines a shortened AK-style receiver layout with a cylindrical helical magazine mounted below the barrel. This offered unusually high ammunition capacity without a long box magazine protruding from the weapon, a useful feature in close quarters. The downside was complexity: helical magazines are harder to manufacture, load, and maintain reliably than simpler box magazines.

Niche service weapon later overshadowed by Vityaz-type designs

The Bizon saw use with Russian security forces but was eventually eclipsed by more conventional magazine-fed successors.

In service, the Bizon's strengths were compact handling, high magazine capacity, and familiar controls. Its limitations were tied mainly to the same unusual magazine that made it notable. Later Russian submachine guns such as the PP-19-01 Vityaz kept AK-style ergonomics while returning to more conventional box magazines, making the Bizon an important but transitional design.
