Research Notes

Heavy postwar Soviet rocket artillery

The BM-24 continued the Soviet emphasis on massed rocket salvos, using larger 240 mm rockets than lighter systems.

The BM-24 was a Soviet multiple rocket launcher developed to provide heavy area fire support. Compared with lighter launchers, its 240 mm rockets gave greater explosive effect per round but with the usual unguided-rocket tradeoff of dispersion. It belongs to the same broad family of weapons that value saturation, shock, and rapid salvo delivery over precision.

Twelve-rail launcher built for area suppression

The BM-24 used a relatively simple rail launcher to fire large unguided rockets from a mobile platform.

Military Periscope describes the BM-24 as a 12-rail, 240 mm multiple rocket system. Its design logic was straightforward: mount heavy rockets on a mobile launcher, fire quickly, then relocate. The system could deliver significant firepower, but it lacked the accuracy, rapid targeting, and survivability expected from modern guided rocket artillery.

Obsolescent but historically important fire-support system

The BM-24 is most relevant today as a Cold War artillery system and as part of the evolution toward modern rocket artillery.

In service terms, the BM-24 is now best understood as an older Soviet rocket-artillery design. It was useful where large salvos and simple maintenance mattered, especially for forces already operating Soviet logistics. Its limitations are equally clear: unguided rockets, exposure during reload, and vulnerability to modern counter-battery detection reduce its relevance against well-equipped opponents.
