Research Notes

Heavy Rocket Artillery Step

The BM-27 Uragan gave Soviet rocket artillery a larger 220 mm system between Grad and Smerch.

The BM-27 Uragan was developed as a heavier multiple rocket launcher than the 122 mm BM-21 Grad, providing greater payload and reach for divisional or army-level fire missions. Introduced in the 1970s, it reflected Soviet emphasis on saturation fires against troop concentrations, air-defense positions, and rear-area targets. Its 220 mm rockets filled a role later complemented by the larger BM-30 Smerch.

16-Tube 220 mm Launcher

A ZIL-135 8x8 chassis and large rocket tubes gave Uragan range and payload at the cost of reload burden.

The Uragan launcher carries sixteen 220 mm tubes on a heavy wheeled chassis. The system can fire salvos rapidly, then move to reduce counter-battery risk, but reloading large rockets requires support vehicles and time. Its effectiveness depends on battery-level coordination, logistics, and target selection rather than individual launcher precision.

Long Post-Soviet Combat Life

Uragan systems remain visible because many former Soviet armies kept heavy rocket artillery stocks.

BM-27 launchers served with Soviet forces and later with Russia, Ukraine, and other operators. They have appeared in several post-Soviet conflicts where area fires and large ammunition stocks shaped artillery operations. Although newer guided systems exist, Uragan remains relevant where massed unguided or specialty rocket salvos are still part of doctrine.
