Overview
Il-112
The Il-112 project, initiated in 1994 as a military and civil transport aircraft, aimed to replace the Antonov An-26 with a design capable of carrying 5,000 kg over 1,200 km. After a series of development challenges and a redesign into the Il-212, the aircraft features improved fuel efficiency, a larger cabin for up to 44 soldiers, and modern avionics allowing for a reduced crew size.

Development history

medium

Il-112 was developed as a Russian light military transport to replace aging An-26-class aircraft.

The Ilyushin Il-112V was conceived as a light military transport for short- and medium-range cargo movement, personnel transport, and austere-field operations. Russia pursued the program to reduce dependence on older Soviet-era Antonov designs, especially the An-26 family. Development stretched over many years and exposed weight, propulsion, industrial, and test-program difficulties. The aircraft's history is therefore more than a simple replacement story: it illustrates the challenge of rebuilding a domestic light-transport supply chain after the Soviet industrial system fractured and after Ukrainian-Russian aerospace cooperation became politically impossible.

Technical profile

medium

The aircraft used a high-wing twin-turboprop layout with rear loading and tactical-airlift utility.

Technically, Il-112V followed a conventional military airlifter formula: high wing, twin turboprops, rear cargo ramp, boxy fuselage, and landing gear suited to less-developed airfields. The design target was a payload class below larger Il-76-type aircraft, allowing routine movement of light vehicles, pallets, troops, and equipment. Its difficulties centered on achieving the required payload, range, and reliability within weight limits. Later discussion of redesign into an Il-212-style turbofan aircraft shows that the original turboprop solution struggled to mature cleanly.

Operational use

medium

Its operational importance is as a replacement requirement, even though the original program did not become a mature fleet aircraft.

Operationally, Il-112 is important because the mission requirement remains real even if the original configuration stalled. Russian forces still need a modern light transport for regional logistics, paratroop support, medical evacuation, and cargo movement into smaller airfields. The aircraft's limited test history and redesign reports mean it should be presented cautiously as a development program rather than a proven in-service workhorse. For readers, the key value is understanding why the platform was needed and why replacing legacy transports has proven difficult.
