The R-27, NATO reporting name AA-10 Alamo, is a Soviet medium-to-long-range air-to-air missile family developed for fighters such as the MiG-29 and Su-27. It came in radar-guided, infrared, and extended-range variants.
The R-27 family allowed Soviet fighters to carry semi-active radar, infrared, and specialized variants for different tactical situations. This modularity gave pilots a mix of beyond-visual-range and silent infrared engagement options before active-radar missiles became widespread.
R-27 remains visible because it was exported widely with Soviet and Russian aircraft. Its continued use and adaptation, including improvised surface-launch concepts, reflect both the depth of legacy inventories and the limits of newer missile availability.
