R-37
The Russian R-37 air-to-air missile (NATO AA-13 Arrow) is a very long-range hypersonic missile capable of engaging targets up to 400 km away, primarily launched from the MiG-31BM interceptor. With a launch weight of 510 kg, speeds up to Mach 6, and advanced active radar homing for terminal guidance, it can autonomously target high-value assets, making it a significant asset in Russia's beyond visual range air combat capabilities.

Research Notes

Russian very-long-range successor to the R-33 line

The R-37 and modern R-37M/RVV-BD family extend the Soviet long-range interceptor missile concept into a newer generation. The weapon is associated with MiG-31BM and other aircraft able to exploit very long engagement ranges.

Designed for high-value targets at extreme range

The missile's size, speed, and active terminal seeker are intended to threaten aircraft such as AWACS, tankers, bombers, and other support platforms. Against maneuvering fighters, practical effectiveness depends on launch geometry, target warning, and networked targeting support.

A major standoff pressure tool in modern air combat

R-37M is significant because it can force support aircraft and tactical aircraft to operate more cautiously. Even when not fired, the threat can shape patrol lines, tanker placement, and the risk calculations of aircraft operating near contested airspace.
