Development History
mediumSaiga-12 is a Russian Kalashnikov-pattern semi-automatic shotgun developed for civilian and tactical markets.
The Saiga-12 was developed by Izhmash/Kalashnikov as part of the Saiga family of sporting and tactical firearms derived from Kalashnikov rifle mechanics. It adapted the familiar AK-style long-stroke gas piston and rotating bolt layout to 12-gauge shotgun shells. The design appeared in the post-Soviet commercial environment, serving civilian, law-enforcement, and tactical markets. Its significance is not that it is an assault rifle, despite the current metadata category; it is a magazine-fed semi-automatic shotgun based on Kalashnikov design principles.
