The Sovremenny class, Project 956 Sarych, was developed as a large destroyer emphasizing anti-surface warfare, naval gunfire support, and medium-range air defense. It complemented the more ASW-oriented Udaloy class in Soviet fleet planning.
Sovremenny ships combined Moskit/Sunburn anti-ship missiles, twin 130 mm gun mounts, SAM systems, helicopters, and ASW weapons. The design was powerful for surface action, although steam propulsion and maintenance demands became notable constraints.
The class served the Soviet and Russian navies, and export ships went to China. Chinese modernization of Sovremenny hulls kept the class relevant as part of the PLAN's transition toward more capable indigenous destroyers.
