Development History

medium

SR-2 Veresk was developed for Russian security services around the 9x21 mm Gyurza cartridge.

The SR-2 Veresk was developed by TsNIITochMash as part of a Russian special-purpose small-arms family using the 9x21 mm Gyurza cartridge. Modern Firearms notes that it was first displayed in 1999 and entered use with FSB and other elite law-enforcement forces in the early 2000s. The design answered a requirement for a compact automatic weapon with better armor penetration than ordinary 9x18 mm or 9x19 mm submachine guns. It belongs with systems such as the SR-1 pistol and SP-10 ammunition ecosystem.

Technical Profile

medium

The weapon is a compact gas-operated 9x21 mm SMG with armor-piercing ammunition compatibility.

Technically, SR-2 is unusual among submachine guns because it uses gas operation rather than simple blowback. It fires 9x21 mm Russian ammunition, including armor-piercing loads designed to defeat soft body armor. The magazine fits in the pistol grip, and modernized SR-2M/SR-2MP versions add improved furniture, rails, sights, and suppressor compatibility. The current metadata says machine gun, but the accurate role is compact submachine gun or personal-defense weapon for special users.

Operational Use

medium

Veresk gives Russian special units compact close-range firepower against protected targets.

Operationally, SR-2 Veresk is suited to protective details, counterterrorism teams, and special police or security forces operating in confined areas. Its 9x21 mm cartridge is the main reason for the design: it provides more penetration against body armor than many older pistol-caliber SMGs. The weapon does not replace rifles for open combat, but it gives close-quarters operators a compact automatic option with specialized ammunition. This makes it a useful page for explaining Russian special-purpose ammunition and weapon pairing.
