SVU

The SVU is a compact bullpup derivative of the Dragunov SVD developed to reduce overall length while retaining 7.62x54R semi-automatic precision fire. It was created for users who needed an SVD-class rifle in tighter spaces, including airborne, internal-security, or special-purpose roles. The OTs-03/SVU family includes select-fire or bipod-equipped variants such as the SVU-A and SVU-AS, reflecting experiments with giving compact marksmen more flexible fire modes.

The SVU preserves the Dragunov gas-operated action and 7.62x54R cartridge but moves the action behind the trigger to shorten the weapon. That gives better handling in vehicles, urban terrain, and parachute or security use, while introducing typical bullpup compromises such as altered trigger feel and ejection-side constraints. The rifle usually uses optical sights and a shortened barrel compared with the SVD, trading some ballistic margin for portability.

Operationally, the SVU is valuable where a full-length SVD is awkward but semiautomatic precision fire is still useful. Its compactness suits urban overwatch, vehicle operations, and specialized teams, while the standard cartridge allows shared ammunition with SVD-family rifles. The tradeoff is that it is not a superior long-range sniper system; it is a space-saving adaptation of a known marksman platform for specific environments.
