Special-purpose suppressed Soviet sniper rifle
VSS was built for covert special-operations fire with subsonic 9x39 mm ammunition.
VSS Vintorez was developed in the Soviet Union during the 1980s for special operations forces that needed quiet precision fire at short to medium distances. It was created alongside the AS Val family around the 9x39 mm subsonic cartridge. The weapon answered a specific requirement: defeat protected targets with far less sound and flash than conventional rifles.
