Formidable

The Formidable class is a six-ship Singaporean multi-mission frigate family derived from the French La Fayette design and adapted with Singaporean combat-system integration. It is the Republic of Singapore Navy's principal high-end surface combatant class.

The frigates combine reduced-signature design, Aster surface-to-air missiles, anti-ship weapons, torpedoes, naval gun armament, and helicopter operations. Their combat value comes from sensors and networking as much as weapons: the class helps Singapore maintain a high-quality maritime picture around busy sea lanes.

Singapore cannot rely on fleet mass, so the Formidable class emphasizes integration, training, and readiness. The ships support maritime security, coalition deployments, and high-end air-defense training while demonstrating Singapore's ability to pair foreign hull design with domestic systems engineering.
